Petrochemical pumps

The petrochemical industry produces highly sophisticated chemicals. Pumping systems in the chemical industry must meet these requirements.

Die petrochemicals is a branch of chemistry that deals with the production of chemical products from crude oil and natural gas. In the petrochemicals Are fugitives in particular hydrocarbons converted like methane, ethane, propane, and butane. This results in higher molecular weight compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene or phenol, which can then be further processed.

What do petrochemical plants do and which pumps are best suited?

Create petrochemical plants chemicals with the help of various transformation processes. In doing so, they convert naturally occurring raw materials into everyday raw materials. Petrochemical plants operate at extremely high pressures and temperatures. In addition, many of the chemical compounds are highly flammable and very reactive. For this reason, there are a few things for refineries and petrochemical manufacturers to consider when choosing systems and pumps.

Important areas in which the plants and pumps The cracking processes, as well as some special applications, must master petrochemicals. There should also be transport pipelines, monitoring stations and distribution stations.

Almost all petrochemical substances are toxic, explosive, abrasive or aggressive. In addition, they all have different flow properties. All these facts make trouble-free continuous operation difficult at high flow rates. This is a very important characteristic, particularly for petrochemicals, which are the source of many of our everyday objects and luxury goods. Pumps and systems should, at best, consist of corrosion-free stainless steel and be able to pump large flow rates without any problems.

Other chemical compounds with high viscosities or various aggregate states are also suitable positive displacement pumps. This type of pump technology combines the interface between gentle and self-priming pumping. Most positive displacement pumps cause a strong vacuum to be created at the inlet. diaphragm pumps For example, they also ensure continuous operation. In addition, these types of pumps are self-priming and have a pumping speed of up to 6-7 meters. They are versatile, have a safe design and have a high degree of flexibility during installation - just like the oscillating ring pumps from pumpsystems, which are also easy to clean and maintain thanks to their unique design.

What are petrochemicals and what is made from them?

Petrochemistry comprises the first stage of processing crude oil-based raw materials. The resulting petrochemical raw materials have become an integral part of modern everyday life. But what kind of substances are these actually?

The final products of the petrochemical industry are primarily plastics, plasticizers, washing raw materials, solvents, and precursors for further chemical processing. Almost all of these substances are based on petroleum. This also combines petrochemicals and refiners with each other. The refining industry cleans, processes and refines natural products into higher-quality products.

All petrochemical processing is based on petroleum and natural gas. petroleum and natural gas It is produced from so-called digested sludge, which consists of dead organic substances on the seabed. Crude oil is finally produced over many millions of years and under the influence of massive pressure and high temperatures.

The basic idea is to make products for everyday use from these raw materials.

Through various petrochemical processes, these common raw materials are converted into the following intermediate or end products, among others:

  • ethylene
  • propylene
  • benzene
  • Toulol
  • xylene

Ethylene is made of polyethylene, which is used, for example, for cling films or for agricultural films. It can also support the ripening process of fruits. In addition, the addition of water from ethylene can produce ethanol.

During petrochemical processing, orthoxylene is converted into nytroxylene or phthalic acid. This raw material is used as a plant protection agent, for anesthetics or even for coating wood.

Benzene becomes styrene (polysytyrol) and cumene (acetone). These products are then used in nail polish removers, for insulation in the construction industry or are processed in smartphones.

Toulol becomes TDI or benzoic acid. These raw materials can be processed into fragrances for perfumes, food preservatives, tobacco, cosmetic products or even mattresses.

Acrylic acid is made from propylene. Acrylic acid is primarily used as an absorber for diapers or wound care. Paraxylol is further processed into terephthalic acid for textiles or PET bottles.

How does petrochemical processing work?

In the first phase, which is refining, the crude oil is separated into lighter hydrocarbons. These are called fractions and are produced by distilling the crude oil. One example of this is naphtha, which is processed into gasoline or as a raw material for the chemical industry. Another example is fuel which is used for heating or as diesel fuel in vehicles.

The second phase is that of petrochemical processing. The distilled substances are further processed for everyday use. This process is divided into three different steps.

First, the fabrics must be cracked. During cracking, the once long-chain hydrocarbons are replaced by a chemical reaction broken into several short-chain molecular chains.

Next, hydrogen-rich synthesis gas is produced using reforming.

The fractions resulting from the distillation are then restructured into higher-value molecules.

The two phases are followed by two end products. On the one hand, there are the so-called olefins. Olefins include ethylene or propylene, for example. On the other hand, there are aromatics, which include benzene, toluene and xylene.

Further production can now be carried out from these raw materials. Plastics, soaps, cleaning agents, drugs, synthetic fibers, rubber, and paints are often produced.

With the help of our pumps and pumping systems, these substances are low shear and transported without contusions.

Which processes are the most common in petrochemical manufacturing and transformation?

One of these processes is, for example, so-called alkylation. Alkylation produces high-quality fuel. This is achieved by using strong acids at low temperatures. In this case, these acids function as catalytic converter. Base oils are produced through so-called solvent extraction. Cooling is also essential for some processes. With the help of extraction or elimination processes, the products are treated in order to achieve the desired product properties. The water treatment process is also very important in petrochemistry. The most important process, however, is steam cracking. For example, ethane is cracked for 200 to 500 milliseconds in the presence of water vapor and under the influence of temperatures between 800 and 850°C.

pumpsystems can be temperature-controlled on request and are therefore ideal for pumping processes and manufacturing processes of this type in petrochemical production.
